HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE KAKCHING HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL

Kakching is an unique town in Manipur having its own peculiar dialect and culture situated in the Southern Part of Manipur 45km away from the Capital City, Imphal. The days of 1944-45 (After World War-II) were a very important period in the history of Kakching. During those days, the leaders of Kakching tried very hard to bring education forward in Kakching. As a result, the Kakching High School (Now Kakching Higher Secondary School) was established in 1944 as an ME School and inaugurated on 18-01-1945 at SangaiYumpham, Kakching (Yumbimacha High School Campus, Kakching Ningthou Leikai). The school was having 6 classrooms and opening upto Class VI. In 1947, a formal Managing Committee was constituted to manage and run the school smoothly. After Class VI, there was no school in Kakching area for further studies. So, the need for establishment of a High School was an indispensable task, as such classesupto IX were added in the school. By the end of 1952 the Managing Committee in its meeting resolved unanimously to shift the school at KakchingChumnangKangjeibung (now KakchingPhousupatLeikai). On 06-12-1953 a building committee was constituted having 14 members and foundation stone of the school (Kakching High School) was laid on 18-12-1953 at its present location (KakchingPhousupatLeikai). In the middle of 1954, the construction work of the School was completed and shifted on 17-07-1954 from SangaiYumpham, Kakching at its present place.At that time, the total land area reserved for the School was 16.90 acres.

In 1955, the students of the School(first matric batch) appeared the class X Examination as private candidates at Johnstone High School, Imphal under Gauhati University. Till 1957, the then managing committees by shouldering all sorts of problems run the school with difficulties. In 1958, theschool got 90% grant- in- aid from the Government of Manipur and as a result the management burden of the school committee was relived to some extent.With the passage of time on 05-08-1978 by an order of the Government of Manipur all grant- in –aid schools of Manipur were converted into full-fledged Government schools. The Kakching High School was also included among such Schools.

In 1987 the school was upgraded to Higher Secondary School opening Arts and Commerce Streams at +2 Level and further in 1996 Science Stream was also opened. Now the School has all three streams of study at +2 Levelviz; Arts,Commerce and Science.

Since its inception the School has been a Pioneer School in the Southern Part of Manipur producing many eminent Scholars,Administrators, Scientists Professor,Doctors, Engineers, Chartered Accountants,Lawyers,IAS/IPS/IFS/IES Officers,Army Officers and other Civil Service Officers etc. who were and are serving all over India and abroad.
